International Womens Day

International Women’s Day marks a day of global acknowledgement of the women’s rights movement and the continuation of fighting for women’s rights across issues still being overcome today. The 2023 theme for IWD is ‘Embrace Equity’.

Speaking to learning and understanding that each person has different circumstances and if we give everyone the same resources and opportunities, we are expecting that this will make people equal, it assumes that everyone started out in the same place, however, this can be vastly inaccurate because everyone is not the same.

Equity-based solutions take into account the diverse, lived experiences of individuals and communities -adapting services and policies according to these differences. It is a long-term and sustainable solution to addressing imbalanced social systems.

In celebration of International Women's Day, Rachel Gilbert developed a limited-edition t-shirt and partnered with the Women’s Community Shelter based in Sydney, Australia where 100% of t-shirt sales were donated. Along with $10.00 from all online orders purchased between the 8th -10th of March 2023 via i=change.

The Women’s Community Shelter works community by community to establish an Australia where women and children are safe, secure, supported and equal.

Devastatingly, 42% of the homeless population in Australia are women, and 56,000 women are homeless in Australia every night. Existing services currently cannot meet the demand for crisis accommodation for homeless women with more than one in two women turned away due to a lack of space. Women’s Community Shelter works to establish new shelters to provide short-term emergency accommodation and support in a safe environment so that these women have the best chance to rebuild their self-esteem and gain back control and fulfilment in their lives.
